What is Potassium?
Potassium is an electrolyte which, in conjunction with sodium, seeks to maintain the electrolyte-fluid balance. The nerve cells use potassium to send the correct nerve impulses around the body, both in the nervous system and in the muscles. Through the sodium-potassium pump, both the transport of water through the cell membranes and the tension of the cell membranes, which is necessary for the cells to function, are controlled. An imbalance in our sodium-potassium ratio can, among other things, lead to high blood pressure as the body needs potassium to excrete sodium.
What functions does Potassium have?
Potassium is best known for its ability to stabilize blood pressure, and is used, among other things in drops in the hospitals. Potassium also contributes i.a. to:
